ACNM Media Award Goes to BoBB:CE!

Choices in Childbirth is thrilled to announce that The Business of Being Born: Classroom Edition was awarded the American College of Nurse Midwives Media Award for 2012. This award honors a media event, a book, a film, or an expression of art that presented midwifery in an accurate and positive manner and in doing so helped to promote the profession of midwifery. “It is an honor to be recognized by the midwifery community for this exciting film and program,” stated Julie Bosak, CNM Program Advisor.

The Business of Being Born: Classroom Edition builds on the enormous success of Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein’s documentary, The Business of Being Born, to encourage questioning the current system. This program aims to educate young adults, promoting the benefits of normal childbirth by discussing the researched-based realities in a classroom appropriate way.  Our aim is to be integrated into university curricula thereby opening up a dialogue to spark interest and action in our future policy makers, practitioners, educators, and parents.

Initially, we are focusing on getting BoBB:CE integrated into curricula within Sociology, Anthropology, Women and Gender Studies, Public Health, and Nursing departments. Currently, we are in the process of identifying professors and student groups that would be interested in presenting BoBB:CE to their classes or groups with the goal of integrating the program into their curricula. If you know anyone interested, please share this with them and let us know who we can contact!

The Business of Being Born: Classroom Edition Program features:
• 30-minute version of the original documentary
• “Birth by the Numbers” presentation by Eugene DeClercq, PhD
• Interviews with Kellie Martin and Alyson Hannigan discussing their birth experiences
• Toolkit to facilitate valuable discussion of maternity issues
