A Note from Our Founder: A Victory for our Community at North Central Bronx
Fourteen months ago, the city closed down Labor and Delivery services at North Central Bronx Hospital.
Within hours, Choices in Childbirth joined forces with other community-based organizations to mobilize and demand that the city reopen services.
We were told by hospital leadership that we were wasting our time and that there was neither the will nor the means to reopen this service.
We didn’t give up.
Today we are thrilled to announce that NCB has reopened its doors to birthing families!
The award winning, midwife-lead, collaborative care program with one of the lowest c-section rates in the city is back, and better than ever. The city has invested $2 million to upgrade the unit and fully staff the program. Women in the Bronx will have access, once again, to high-quality care from teams of midwives and obstetricians working together to provide continuity of care across the childbearing year. You can read more about the city’s modernization efforts in this article from the New York Times.
All of us at Choices in Childbirth are incredibly proud to have been a part of the coalition that helped turn the tables and realize this victory. We are aware that this success would not have been possible without the passionate outcry from the community. We are grateful to all of you who took a stand for NCB and the families of the Bronx by signing the petition and showing up for community actions. Together, as a community, we have done something really important. May the knowledge of this victory take you higher!
